Asthma & Anaphylaxis

These course units are usually taught together, however can be taught separately if required. They apply to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving asthma attacks and allergic reactions may occur. It is relevant for people working in childcare, education, aged and community care, sport, tourism, hospitality, industry enterprises and other environments. These courses are Nationally Recognised and the qualifications will last for 3 years. ACECQA approved.

Duration

Asthma: 2hrs, Anaphylaxis 2 hours (total 4 hrs for combined course)

Course Prerequisites

No pre-requisites for these units. Minimum age 14.

Assessment

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge.

Course Content

This course provides the skills and knowledge to be able to handle asthma and anaphylaxis emergency situations in the workplace.
It includes:
  • Background knowledge of the causes, symptoms and effects of asthma
  • Emergency treatment of asthma
  • Risk minimisation and management strategies for asthma emergencies
  • Definitions of allergic reaction and anaphylaxis and recognition of signs and symptoms
  • Responsibilities of organisations and individuals in relation to allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
  • Risk minimisation and management strategies for anaphylaxis emergencies
  • First aid management for a severe anaphylactic reaction
